A classroom is the traditional setting for learning new knowledge and skills, but with the advent of the Education for All framework and the Sustainable PH 2030, schools are now reaching out to a larger demograph of students via alternative programs.
This is the shared goal of Sapang Palay National High School as they conducted last Friday the first School Action Learning Cell (SLAC) focusing on Alternative Delivery Modes to prevent students from dropping out. Attended by advisers and non-advisers across the four grade levels, SLAC discussed the different programs SPNHS is offering to cater the specific needs of learner unable to attend the traditional classroom setting due to work, financial difficulties, or other justifiable and legitimate reasons. School Principal Wilma Aquino said the strengthening of these existing programs is due to last year’s drop out rate (3.70%), and that they will exhaust more effort in minimizing it. “Our goal is to have zero drop-out this year. And with ADM, I believe it’s possible in Sapang Palay National High School”, she added. Different coordinators presented their programs and its requirement for students. Ma'am Analyn Doyac, coordinator of Open High School Program (OHSP), discussed its features such as the use of distance learning in which a qualified learner is given self-learning modules. The Effective and Affordable Secondary Education, or Project EASE on the other hand, offers flexible time option to students who cannot report to class during certain seasons of the school year (eg. agricultural work, early pregnancy). It is headed by Ma’am Petronila Bunao. Aside from use of modules, online and blended mode of learning are also utilized on these programs. Meanwhile, Ma’am Elisa Omac of the Drop Out Reduction Program (DORP), stressed the importance of teamwork of teachers and the community for the success of the said projects. There are also programs that give opportunity for over-aged students to be promoted or accelerated in another grade level – the Philippine Educational Placement Test (PEPT) and the Accreditation and Equivalency Test (A&E). “PEPT is given every June and November of the year. SPNHS conducts review classes in helping the students pass the exam”, Guidance counselor Nelia Nieto said. For more information, coordinators are open for concerns and consultation at their respective departments as well as at Guidance office. OPHS and Project EASE departments are open every 7:00 – 9:00 am and 1:00 – 3:00 pm daily.

In 2008 the Special Program in the Arts at Sapang Palay National High School was opened and catered around 40 students brimming with talent in singing, dancing, and acting; 10 years after, it is now home to 700 plus students cultivating their innate skills in the arts with fifteen trained specialists supervising them. SPA recently celebrated its 10 year anniversary in a festive mood, parading their talent during the opening of the arts month celebration for 2018, last February 1 at the Roquero Gym. Part of the celebration for this month will be the alumni homecoming as well as students and parents values formation with PTA president Pastor Samuel Esmenda as the resource speaker. "It has come a long way," Former SPA coordinator Eloisa Orpilla described the program’s journey as a great experience. "Looking back, the humble beginnings of this small family has branched out into a bigger one, with accomplishments and accolades that are truly overwhelming", she said. But SPA is not stopping anytime soon, part of their future plan is to improve the facilities for the nine different specializations in the discpline of music, theater arts, dance, creative writing, visual, and media arts. Mrs. Margarita Crizaldo, the current coordinator of the program laid out plans for the next school as a way of upgrading SPA. The month-long celebration will end with annual recital on Feb 22, where different performances and exhibits will be showcased for the audience and other guests. This includes the concert of the Drum and Lyre Corps of Mr. Joy Carino. “Wonderful art exhibits and outstanding performances by the students are to expected in the recitial. Dapat abangan 'yan” media arts specialist Mr. Arman Blancaflor said. After years of medal drought in the newspaper category, Sapang Palay National High School made its glorifying comeback after winning the 3rd best Secondary Filipino school paper in Region III.
‘Ang Suhay’, the official school paper of SPNHS bagged awards in: News section (rank 1), Lay-out (rank 2.5), and Editorial page (rank 5) with Mr. Marlon Fernandez as the school paper adviser. "It has been years since our school won a place in the newspaper category, we have been doing great in the individual category and this is really great news", Mr. Fernandez said during the awarding ceremony held at Otel, Pampanga last February 6. “Di ko akalaing mananalo kami, sa dami ba naman ng contestants” he added. About 150 schools participated in the group category of Regional Schools Press Conference this year, in the six-section contest (news page, editorial, features, science, sports, lay-out). 'Ang Suhay', together with the top 10 school papers in each section will be Central Luzon’s representative for the National Schools Press Conference to be held on Feb. in Dumaguete. "Well, we are hoping na manalo parin sa national level itong dyaryo natin” Fernandez said. Also present in the ceremony were school Principal Mrs. Wilma Aquino, Head Teacher in Filipino Mrs. Eloisa Orpilla, Suhay Editor-in-chief Jezreel Ines, and staffers Rose Ann Gumban and Elaine Laurio. To further promote Sapang Palay National High School to graduating elementary students, Grade 7 curriculum chairman Michael delos Reyes led the early registration campaign to nearby elementary schools in the division, yesterday morning.
Together with Mr. delos Reyes were representatives from the different special programs the school is offering for interested and talented students. Ten schools were visited during the two-day campaign in which SPNHS teachers discussed the opportunities and benefits of enrolling in the school, such as special programs that cater specific talents and needs; scholarship aids given to worthy learners; as well as the awards and other accomplishments achieved by the school. "Our school targets grade 6 graduates with academic standings, or students with talent in the arts and sports, and even in writing wherein they will be part of the newly opened program, SPJ.", Mr. delos Reyes said. The actual early registration will take place on January 27-Febuary 28, and interested parents and students will have to bring their school report card and authenticated birth certificate. |
